Research and work experience

Currently I am a CO-FUND Junior Research Fellow associated with the Anthropology Department and the Wolfson Research Institute for Health and Wellbeing. My project “Forensic Science and Nation Building in Latin America” examines the field of forensic science (specifically genetics and physical anthropology) and its relations with notions of ethnicity, race and nation building in a comparative perspective in Mexico and Colombia.The two years of the fellowship will also serve to develop the second strand of my research interests that aims to understand the articulations between notions of kinship as enacted through forensic genetic research by the relatives of the disappeared and its links to hopes of national reparation and truth in both Mexico and Colombia. Emphasis is made on how the products of scientific endeavours are mobilised to produce order in contexts of uncertainty, impunity and extreme violence.

I have been in charge of conducting and designing ethnographic research on Colombian genetics and public engagement: 9 months of fieldwork in Bogotá and Medellin (Oct 2011-July 2012) and 9 months of writing up in Manchester University, UK. Working as part of the Leverhulme funded project under the direction of Professor Peter Wade and Professor Eduardo Restrepo (local co-applicant), with the support of a research assistant, Roosbelinda Cardenas The project explores various aspects of genetics/genomics in Colombia including the project CANDELA which is an international consortium dedicated to the study of human biological variation in Latin America, as well as the relations between race, ethnicity and nation with forensic and medical/population genetics.

This organisation was originally created as a small project to aid citizens living in the middle of the “War on Drugs” in Mexico and other zones of conflict to participate and understand forensic science, the idea was to make it easier to demand their right for justice, reparation and robust forensic investigations. However after receiving 25,000 dollars from Singularity University and thanks to the voluntary participation of other young academics, citizens, NGO’s and professionals interested in our mission, we are now legally constituted as non-profit organisation in Mexico (2012). Our first project aims to diagnose the forensic challenges (specifically in the field of genetics) faced by the Mexican government, and document the experiences lived by the relatives of those that have disappeared due to violence when facing the Mexican forensic system. All of this in order to create a citizen-led forensic biobank to make it possible for victims of violence to actively participate in the search for truth.
